When crap hits the fan!
Woke up in the morning looking forward to a nice sunny Sunday…there was a niggling feeling at the back of my mind that something crappy was going to happen...you know that feeling sometimes when there is a strange uneasiness and you can’t put your finger on to it but you know it..
Hubby is away at a conference and the kids and I spent time at the beach for a while….then headed home tired and I decided to catch up with my work that I had goofed off on.
Those deadlines sitting on your throat and you can’t swallow it or spit it out…
Turned on my 5 year old computer and the machine refused to come to life…I pleaded, prodded, cajoled it and went on my knees, my heart in my mouth. I plugged, unplugged, started, restarted, prayed and wrung my hands in despair…It came to life then died over and over again… I hastily call hubby in panic. He said not to worry all will be fine…Sure; I say and call up Dell technical service.
The call goes through and soon I am talking to a tech service person in India called “Seth” …nice guy ran me through the process over the phone and informed me very sadly that my hard drive was corrupted and I lost all my stuff… I pleaded with him hoping he will say the machine would come to life somehow when he breathes some sweet Indian air through the phone…He apologized and informed me that it was no use …the error messages I got indicated ‘sudden death’…that was it..
I stood there staring at the dumb and dead computer feeling like crap…all my work, my photos, my articles… all my stupid writings… all lost in that machine that I cannot extricate...If only I had backed up some of the data I would not have been crying now…All the stuff I wrote for the newspaper with the deadlines coming up gone…my nature photos and my past……Some photos and articles I had backed up a couple of months back… live on CD’s to tell their tale…
I kicked myself over and over again…if only I had remembered that a machine could die…I wouldn’t be so distraught and back to nothing now…A lesson learnt the hard way. ..Back up every darn thing…Until then I wring my hands in despair...not sure if a miracle will help me through…
Planning to run to the nearest mountain first thing in the morning and scream my lungs out until I drop….

Ranjini,
I had no clue that the advts are context sensitive...
I changed the title of my blog but those "naughty or nice" ads continue to be there...I don't know how to get rid of them...
you getting mosquito baits?? :)..well ! I should have been getting advts for 'pooper scoopers' but instead I am getting these cheesy ones..
Thanks for that info...

Hey Bliz,
Not sure if you are seeing the same right frame!
You know that the ads on the right side are context sensitive, right? So why are there some bad girls - specifically the ad's title is 'Naughty or nice". Your title seems to have something to do with it!!!
For my last 3 blogs, I have been getting a pile of dead mosquitoes on my right frame with baits to kill them!

Hey Nargis,
Yeah its one of those things that we have no control over...crap happens...
I was totally bummed out yesterday but since despair doesn't help me I figured I shall just do some damage control and move on...what is lost is lost..
Some of the stuff I had backed up on to my laptop so I still have some stuff left..though majority of my photos are gone...
Please do backup your books drafts and all your articles...can't trust these machines..
Thank you ..I am alive and kicking :) :)

Hey Blizz................
That's so terrible! Tomorrow I'm going to transfer everything from my comp to another. Never realised a back up was so essential. I guess some of us lazy ones need a wake up call like this.....only this is not a wake up call. Feels more like a gunshot aimed straight at your heart. My condolences.....for that untimely death.

Hey Bliz,
I have two suggestions for you.
One, always email every single file as soon as it is created to your Gmail. I have some very huge files including graphics saved in Gmail and I do it diligently. I even email myself a draft with the date just to keep it safe. I email all photos to myself in Gmail and Yahoo. I also post my home videos on private Google video accounts. That way I always have a digital version incase the analog dies!
The second option would be to create a webpage through Cox if that's what is your cable company. Then you can transfer large files very easily to save them by FTPing. File Transfer Protocol. Also, you can go to a wesite called YouSendIt.com and send very large files to whichever account you want.
These are all the many ways by which you can keep duplicates. Do not simply back them all into CDs or DVDs and be happy because none of them are as reliable as uploading on to reliable websites. Many of my CDs and DVDs have also conked out over the years and many cannot even be read by a computer because of shoddy burning software.
Hope this helps.
