Quantum Physics, Meditation & Me!
So there I was sitting on my Yoga mat with my legs criss-cross- applesauce and my hands extended with the tip of my thumb and fore-finger touching lightly; with my mind a blank sheet of canvas trying to go into a cosmic journey; relieving my innermost free-radicals out into the atmosphere- so as to absorb blithely anti-oxidants that would wash away my inner self and mind to make me a whole new person…or so I thought.
That wasn’t happening…What was happening was my mind was in a constant Brownian motion and try as much as possible I was only able to control my breathing. Now I like to breathe and take in a lot of oxygen enabling my lungs to expand and draw the inner energy. That’s what the yoga instructor said, not me.
How the heck do I control the overactive brain that I possess from birth? I have long since blamed it on my parental genes and absolved myself of all blame. The part in Yoga where you twist yourself into a pretzel I can do without ...oftentimes I found my American counterparts pretzelizing themselves more easily than me making me a tad bit embarrassed being an Indian and all and not being able to do those smooth body maneuvers.
So I decided to do some research on the Quantum physics angle to this whole meditation issue and try to see light from their point of view. “Their” being the Albert Einstein’s and such physicists who had a supernova for a brain and could see things that ‘us’ normal people couldn’t see. As you know Quantum physics is a branch of physics with applications to both experimental and theoretical physics. It has everything to do with sub-atomic particles and explains black body radiation and electron orbits.
Those genius guys came up with ‘heterotic-superstring’ theory of particle physics.
That is supposed to mean it is a theory of closed strings with 10 dimensions and 496 mass less gauge bosons. I have no clue what that means but it sounds very important and meaningful. If I could figure it out, I would be working for NASA and the next person on the moon. But for now I am contented with my feet on terra –firma.
It was Einstein’s lifelong dream to locate the unified source of the diversified universe-the fountainhead of all the laws of nature. This can be achieved by transcendental meditation wherein human awareness opens to the direct experience of the unified field. This experience is characterized by a state of profound rest-much deeper than sleep-while the mind remains restfully alert. This state of restful alertness effectively dissolves accumulated stress and fatigue and thereby prevents a wide range of stress related disorders-which account for 80% of all disorders.
The field of pure transcendental consciousness was introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1971 and has since established a University here with thousands of people learning Vedic sciences in relation to Quantum physics and so on.
For me the quantum physics book has been a good lullaby and every time I read five pages I find myself dozing off and shifting into dreamland with quantum leaps. Not sure if it is because the concept is alien to me and hence soporific or if the thought of it just puts me to sleep. Either way I realized soon enough that Yoga/meditation wasn’t for me and I went back to my regular morning or evening walks on the hiking trails in the mountains which is the closest to heaven I can get.

Hi blizzard,

One of my ex-colleague had this habit to taking his afternoon nap after lunch. Whereas the rest of us would scramble back to our respective tables to continue our work. He would just close his eyes and sit on his seat. One day, our boss came in right after the lunch and found him taking his regular nap. He snapped at him - Mr.X what are you doing! He replied - Sir, I was meditating ! Just to add - he lost his job.
Nice enjoyable article

Hey Blizz,
Enjoyed your ruminations on quantom physics and meditation. I think most of us are on the same boat, with minds that run like wild horses when body remains still. My thoughts jump around so rapidly it might start at one thing and end up somewhere totally different. Sometimes I like to backtrack my thoughts to see how they reached where they did.
Yeah, walks are good. Exercise for body and mind and when the path is scenic, it is an added bonus.

Hi Bizzard,
Meditation is one thing which i find difficult doing, but i go to the gymnasium for some exercise, driving a two wheeler they say is a kind of meditation, you really need to concentrate on the traffic, so opted for this.
Enjoyed the read. keep writing.
Cheers,
Opulence.

Dear Bliz it is an interesting topic.I would share my veiws.
I want to quoate Kabir's Doha( I vaguely remember,Pardon me if the lines are topsy turvy or any jumbling, and if in complete)
"Maala firathai haath mein! Man fhirai dasa disaayen"
Dhayi achar prem ki ......."
I hope you know Rajneesh. He was in lot of contraversies in his last phase as the people mis under stood him,mis used his theories and probably he too was dragged into that storm & controversies in the end.
His very first book written when he was working in Bangalore( At that time he was not known to the world) as a lecturer/professor .That book was about 100-150 pages but explains how to reach that trans dental state of mind.
In his book he says sit in a quite place in a room or in a quite place under a tree and close your eyes and try to concentrate.you can chant any name like...Rama,Krishna,Esu,Allah or nothing.
As the mind is a monkey your mind will criss cross with many thoughts just like as told by Kabir.
Let them pass out.Every day do the same thing at same time and place so that your mind will be tired of those thoughts and it will stop thinking. At this time you concentrate on the name you are chanting or the object you are concentrating like a flame.candle, water or nature.Gradually you will reach your own enlightment. That is you have to find your own way of relaxation and enlightment.
All tose exercises taught as yoga are Isometric exercises and will definitely help you to relax your muscles.Of course many are making a big money in teaching this yoga.
Now why Rajneesh was in contraversy...because as usual questions and answers by people and media... one important question was... What if there is a Sexual desire?"
He explained .. any desire you fullfill it till you get bored. This particular part was blown out of proportions by media, misused by people like Hippies, drug addicts, drug pedlars and Rajneesh, an ordinary simple person became a celebrety and, money was pouring in .Many branches of his ashram sprouted up in every country.
Shall I tell you one thing. Spirituality is personal. It can not be taught by any one.once you are able to control your mind from those daily chores even for 5minutes you are a Yogi.
That's why Malaa fhirna, ram nam japna with out con centration is not yoga.
I wish to say one famous malayalam story "Viddi Kooshmaandam"
Viddi means Fool. Kooshmaandam means white pumpkin which has more water and fbre and not many calories in it as a food.
The story goes like this....
There was a famous Namboothiri in Kerala who was an expert in removing "Snake poision" of any ferocious venomos snake by chanting some "Mantra". He was the dignitary in the King's court. Raja(King) has given him lot of gifts like ...Land,Gold, House,Medals etc. Namboothri had a servant to look after his lands and fields.
This servant was bringing vegetables from the field to the Namboothri's palace every day and he was accompanied by his young son aged 10yrs.This boy was amused to see so many people coming with snake bite and saved by the Namboothri. He too wanted to learn the Mantra. so every day he was asking the Namboothri to teach him the mantra.
Nambothri was of the opinion that the down trodden servants are fools. But he liked the boy and told him that he wil teach him the Mantra once he grows big.But the boy went on pestering and years passed by.Now the boy was a 17yr old young chap. His pestering was so much the Namboothri was vexed and wanted to get rid off his nuiscence. So he told the boy to come early in the morning empty stomach ,after taking a bath the next day.
The boy did exactly the same and was there in the early morning. But Namboothri was attending to a snake bite victims. and the number of victims was increasing and the boy was restless that he should learn the Mantra before the Sun rise.So he went and fell at the feeet of the Namboothri and begged.Namboothri was already tired and he told "Ada Poda. "Viddi Kooshmandam" The boy asked him to say it again and namboothri thought the boy is angry as he had scolded him as fool(Viddi Kooshmandam). He was angry and repeatedly said Vidd Kooshmandam" again and again. The boy did a sashtanga namaskar saying thank you my Guru and left.
Years rolled by.Now the Namboothri was old and his clients dwindled. He came to know that another young fellow from a lower caste is removing the snake venom and had become popular than him.He was curious to see that man but his ego prevented to visit a lower caste person. In course of time the Namboothri was removed from Raja's services and the young man was appointed.
One day people were waiting to see the young man who was to pass through their street. So Namboothri coverd his head with a towel (to disguise himself) and waited in the crowd. The young man's chariot was passing through.Suddenly he recognised the Namboothri and stopped his chariot and fell on the feet of Namboothri saying "GURUVE Namaha"
Namboothri did not recognise him but was gloating for the respect and took the youmg man to his house. He made him sit in the decorated cahir and gave a feast. And sent away all the crowd and asked the young man who he was and what Manthra he taught him.
The young man told about his child hood and the manthra he learnt was"VIDDI KOOSHMANDAM"
I hope now you understand what it means.,the concentration and his mantra was Viddi Kooshmandam. That is yoga."Concentration to invoke the self brain power"
Thank you for your nice blog.God bless you with peace.

Hi Blizzie,
This was fun.
Yeah, quantum physics and sleep...they always go hand in hand for me too...lol
However, meditation is something I've indulged in abundantly...I use a form of light meditation. works for me...yeah, it requires alot of practice. It does not come in one or couple of sitting. I got it after about 1.5 yrs of practice.
You know Bliz, it's not possible to still the mind (heard that great yogis do it) But, what is possible is to spin your thoughts around positive ones. That's what I do ! then slowly you are taken to placid, sublime thoughts.
But Blizzie, try cooking gurl, for me it's as good as any meditation....I totally lose myself when I cook....luckily for me, none of my family/ friends ahave ever complained about my food...LOL

hi Blizz,
Dis was a fun read....
some say dat yoga or too many such related activities can make one egocentric/selfish. I guess the key is to do it in moderation.
I am wid u, abt the 'overactive mind'. heeeheee....got too much going on in my mind.....too much.
As for the manuevers, they r not so difficult, after a course of time. The nightmare comes if one continues such stringent exercise routines and stops them all of a sudden, for a long period of time.

Blizzard : Enjoyed this one, when it comes to relaxation and stuff there is no one right answer, different methods work for different people. A long time ago I was on a retreat where we started meditation at 5 AM, the room was dimly lit and in no time I was snoring.
Guess the whole idea is to relax and do what is fun.
